Meet the Instructors

Tim Lanfear

I was lucky enough to grow up on a mixed farm in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds and from childhood I’ve had a fascination with the natural world. I grew up making shelters, lighting fires and learning about those plants that we can safely eat or use in other ways.

As a teenager I joined the armed forces and it was here that I began to learn and become interested in survival skills.

A career in the Fire & Rescue Service followed my military service and I was involved with the development and delivery of “specialist Rescue” at local, regional and national levels.

Having attended several Bushcraft courses and Instructor courses over the years I now work as a Bushcraft and Survival Instructor. Growing up on a farm helped me to understand the fragile balances that exist in nature and how important it is for us, as human beings, to take responsibility for the sensible management of our countryside. To do that we first need to have a better understanding of how it works and of our place within it, so I’m really excited to be working for Cotswold Adventures delivering these Bushcraft courses and sharing the great outdoors with you.

Growing up in South Africa, my earliest memories are of camping, hiking and generally being out in nature. As a child, I attended many residential school trips to various game reserves and so started developing a passion for fauna and flora from a young age.

During my childhood, I did a lot of wild camping, hiking, hunting, tracking and off-road driving. My time in the South African army added to my knowledge and enthusiasm for the outdoors.

In 1993, I relocated to Portugal (I am half Portuguese). After a few years, I moved to the UK where I now live with my wife and our two children.

In 2010 I went on some survival and bushcraft courses; these rekindled my passion for the outdoors and shortly afterwards, I undertook a 2½ year apprenticeship to become a bushcraft instructor. I love that I can now share my skills and enthusiasm for the outdoors with children and adults alike on the various courses we undertake.

I am Remote Emergency Care Expedition Level 4 first aid trained.
